Tyler, Texas (KLTV) – Diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate in this country. The number of infected people has increased from 27 million in 2018 to an estimated 37 million, according to the CDC. As a result, education about this disease is the focus of a UT Health program called Diabetes College.
“It just addresses the daily challenges of diabetes and solves some of those problems. said diabetes educator Marcy Wright.
This program provides self-management training such as learning how to plan meals, incorporate physical activity, and monitor blood sugar levels. They also teach people in East Texas about preventing diabetes-related complications, how drugs work, and tips for reaching their goals.
Launched in the late 1990s through the Tyler Clinic, the program was later delivered via telemedicine last April and saw a 41 percent increase in enrollment.
“UT Health East Texas covers a very large service area and because many of these patients are unable to come to Tyler for diabetes education, we are reaching out to these patients via telemedicine and We can provide a service,” Wright said.
Wright said the demographic age range is 45 to 65+, but over the past three years, a third of patients have gone from 19 to 44. “We are starting to test for diabetes at a younger age,” she said. .
Another reason the disease is becoming more common is due to the increasing rates of obesity affecting young adults and children. The main educational points in this program are: “Be aware of your diabetes and don’t hide it. Keep your appointments with your doctor. Check your blood sugar. If you notice it, do something about it,” Wright said.
According to the CDC, 90 to 95 percent of people with diabetes in the United States have type 2 diabetes, while only 5 percent have type 1 diabetes.
