How Meditation Enhances Positive Thoughts and Reduces Negative Feelings
People who meditate daily are less likely to avoid negative information. This is the finding in a new study by a research team that includes researchers from ETH Zurich. [1, 2].
A wise decision maker gathers all relevant information and soberly weighs the pros and cons. This includes collecting information that may cause anxiety or discomfort. At least, that’s the theory.
But the reality is often quite different. Due to what experts call cognitive bias, people tend to ignore potentially harmful information even when it’s available.
For example, they don’t want to know if the investment is no longer worth it, if a medical checkup revealed an illness, or if a friend betrayed their trust. The reason is that just thinking about negative information causes fear and anxiety.
A recent study by Eliot Asch, professor of law, economics and data science at ETH Zurich, shows that regular mindfulness meditation can help people reduce this tendency to avoid information.
Manage negative emotions more effectively
Researchers used the practice of mindfulness meditation to sit still with eyes closed and focus on breathing, bodily sensations, thoughts and feelings. Numerous scientific studies have shown that regular meditation practice has positive effects on both the body and mind.
Just 15 minutes of meditation a day can help people relieve stress, improves focus, reduces risk of depression, and increases productivity. As with other studies, Ash and his co-authors showed that daily meditation increases people’s ability to combat negative emotions.
“Students who meditated daily for two weeks had a better ability to simply observe their negative emotions and accept them calmly,” Ash says. This positive development was not observed in members of the control group.

The authors of this study concluded that mindfulness meditation: increase people’s resilience It reduces unpleasant feelings and allows you to process negative information more objectively.
“People who are good at dealing with negative emotions will want to know what could go wrong as a result of a particular decision,” Ash says.
In other words, meditation training can help people make better decisions. They are more likely to refer to information that they may react to negatively, thus giving them more comprehensive information.
2 weeks daily meditation
For this study, researchers recruited 261 participants through an online platform and randomly divided them into two groups. 1 group meditated every day For 15 minutes the other listened to relaxing music [3].
Before and after the experiment, study participants were required to answer standardized questions to ascertain how well they coped with negative information and how strongly they responded to their emotions. For example, participants were asked if they would like to receive potentially harmful information about their health, financial investments, personal relationships, etc.
