Chronic illness has above average prevalence in Downs

The incidence of diabetes in the Darling Downs area is higher than average, with 3,3890 people in the area being treated for type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

National Diabetes Service Scheme According to Australia’s Diabetes Map, 6% of the population in the Darling Downs and West Morton Primary Health Network regions have diabetes, above the national average of 5.4%.

The region has 30,940 people with type 2 diabetes, 2950 with type 1 diabetes, 1070 with gestational diabetes, and 160 as “other” diabetes.

This week is National Diabetes Week, and Elizabeth Henry, a Darling Downs Health certified diabetes educator, said it was important to raise awareness of the disease.

“Diabetes is a condition in which the body is unable to maintain normal levels of glucose due to lack of insulin, hormones that convert glucose into energy, or progressive insulin resistance,” Ms. Henry said.

“Undiagnosed or poorly managed, diabetes can increase the risk of cardiovascular and renal disease, amputation and eye disease, and can lead to lifelong health complications.

“It’s important to increase awareness about diabetes and its signs and symptoms, increase early detection and treatment, and reduce the risk of diabetes-related health problems.

“It’s also important to increase people’s understanding of diabetes, so they can change their lifestyles to empower, support, and prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.”

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system destroys insulin-producing pancreatic cells. Type 1 diabetes is unrelated to modifiable lifestyle factors, has no cure, and cannot be prevented.

Type 2 diabetes is a progressive condition in which the body becomes resistant to the normal effects of insulin or loses the ability to produce sufficient insulin. Type 2 diabetes is associated with variable lifestyle risk factors, including genetic and family-related risk factors.

Gestational diabetes can occur during pregnancy and usually disappears after the baby is born. You are diagnosed with higher than normal blood sugar levels during pregnancy.
