Who is at risk and why?
Certain patient populations are at increased risk of developing complicated urinary tract infections.
In this first of four mini podcasts, Kim Leuthner, Ph.D., FIDSA, explains the subtle differences between complex and simple urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Complicated urinary tract infections involve factors such as devices, surgical involvement, and anatomical abnormalities, increasing the risk of complications and bacterial infections. The presence of larger reservoirs of pathogens makes these infections even more difficult to treat. Understanding this difference is critical to tailoring treatments to a patient’s specific needs, says Leutner.
It is important to distinguish between asymptomatic bacteria and complicated urinary tract infections because not all patients with bacteria present in their urine require treatment. Bacteria may lurk in the urine or bladder without causing symptoms, but complex devices worn by patients give pathogens the opportunity to cause actual infections.
The presence or absence of symptoms is an important distinguishing factor. Patients with complicated urinary tract infections experience systemic symptoms such as fever, pain and back pain, while asymptomatic patients only show the presence of bacteria in their urine. Proper differentiation leads to proper treatment decisions.
Patients at risk also include men facing unique complications related to the prostate. Transplant patients and those with kidney stones, bladder stones, hydronephrosis, or stents are also susceptible to complications from surgical interventions and abnormal urinary tract function. Identifying these high-risk patients is essential to ensure timely and appropriate management of urinary tract infections.
