Four Americans die in fungal meningitis outbreak linked to Mexican clinic
At least four people have died of fungal meningitis after being treated in a clinic in Mexico.
Health officials are asking anyone who may have been treated with an epidural at two clinics linked to the outbreak to be tested for fungal meningitis, even if they are asymptomatic.
Symptoms include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and altered mental status.
The two clinics are identified as River Side Surgical Center and Clinica K-3. They are located in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. The clinic was closed on May 13th. Anyone who was treated with epidural anesthesia at these clinics between January 1 and May 13 could have been infected.
The Mexican Ministry of Health has provided the CDC with a list of US residents who have had surgery at these clinics, and the CDC is working to contact these people. Anyone who may have been exposed should immediately go to the nearest emergency room for testing. This test includes a lumbar puncture (LP), also called a spinal tap.

What to do if exposed to fungal meningitis
If you had an epidural at the Riverside Surgical Center in Matamoros, Mexico or Clinica K-3 between January 1st and May 13th, you should go to the nearest emergency room. The CDC says people should get tested even if they don’t have symptoms.
The CDC reported that people with asymptomatic or mild symptoms have tested positive. Early treatment can prevent the disease from becoming more severe. Fungal meningitis starts out mild and can be life-threatening if not treated.
A spinal tap is done by inserting a needle into the space around the spine in the patient’s lower back and withdrawing fluid. The liquid is then tested in the lab.
“When you arrive, tell emergency room staff that you should be tested for possible fungal meningitis. Please tell them you underwent external anesthesia,” the CDC said.
Fungal meningitis isn’t contagious and doesn’t spread from person to person, according to the CDC.
