Gwinnett County, Georgia — Rabies attacks are on the rise in Gwinnett County, where two rabid cats bit people in the last few weeks.

Channel 2 Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson I spoke with Gwinnett County Animal Control officials, who said they had seen an increase in rabies animals earlier this year.

“They’re all different animals and under different circumstances,” said Gwinnett County Animal Control Director Vernon Sawyer.

It is not uncommon for the Gwinnett County Animal Control Department to receive rabies calls in the summer, especially in rural areas.

But what’s strange this year is that we’ve already received a number of calls.

“There have been four incidents so far before the summer really started,” Sawyer said.

A rabid cat attacked someone in Dacula on May 30, and a rabid cat bit a woman on Barker Station Walk in Buford on Saturday.

Anyone exhibiting symptoms of rabies is advised to seek emergency assistance immediately and call the Gwinnett County Animal Control Department.
