Middleville bat tests positive for rabies, first time in Barry County this year
MIDDLEVILLE, Michigan — Bats in Middleville have tested positive for rabies.
This is the first time rabies has been detected in a bat in Barry County in 2023, according to the Barry Eaton District Health Department (BEDHD).
Health officials say bats are the most common human contact with rabies. Exposure can occur from a seemingly small wound or bite.
We have heard that exposures can occur indoors where people may not have been aware of the contact. Examples include people who are asleep, children, and people who may be intoxicated or mentally ill, BEDHD said.
Anyone who has been scratched or bitten by a bat, or has an animal that has been in contact with a bat, is encouraged to call BEDHD by dialing 517-541-2641. As required by law, animal bites must be reported.
