West Nile virus has appeared in Greenwich. A mosquito control program in Connecticut announced on July 18 that mosquitoes trapped in Mianus River Park tested positive for West Nile virus. These are the first positive mosquitoes confirmed by the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) in Greenwich this year. Trapped mosquitoes (Culex pipiens) generally bite birds and breasts and breed in standing water, often found in abandoned tires, bird baths, artificial containers such as basins. Newington, Connecticut — West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes have been found in Newington, where the first signs of the virus were found in Connecticut this season.
According to the Connecticut Agricultural Laboratory, the insect was caught on July 8. The Connecticut Agricultural Laboratory is responsible for catching, identifying, and testing mosquitoes in West Nile and other viruses.
The positive test is the first of 60,366 mosquitoes tested so far this summer.
Scientists discovered another virus, the Jamestown Canyon virus, in five mosquitoes caught in North Stonington, Waterford, and Westport in June.
Diseases associated with the Jamestown Canyon virus usually cause mild symptoms such as fever, headache, and fatigue, but rarely can cause encephalitis.
According to the State Department of Health, the illnesses caused by the West Nile show similar symptoms, with 1 in 150 infected people developing severe and sometimes fatal illnesses.
Scientists say they typically see the West Nile virus infecting Connecticut mosquitoes in July and even more severe eastern equine encephalitis in August.
Last year, three state residents died after suffering eastern equine encephalitis.
