COVID-19 St. Johns County survivors urged to donate plasma to help recover from other viruses-News-St. Augustine Records
Due to the exponential rise of coronaviruses, medical professionals view plasma therapy as a promising way to reduce the severity of the virus, especially when used early in treatment.

According to Forbes, OneBlood is currently increasing hospital orders for plasma supplies by about 500%.
“The surge in events across Florida is driving demand,” Forbes said in a telephone interview with The Record.
Like last week, Tallahassee had no convalescent plasma. The closest supplies were in St. Petersburg, 300 miles away, when a doctor at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare began a state survey.
“We’re asking people two weeks after recovery from a coronavirus to take one step further and donate their plasma. They’re in urgent need,” Forbes said.
Forbes said locally donated blood contributed to the supply as a whole, and the distribution was determined by the jurisdiction that most needed plasma, the number of cases, and blood group matching.
“But as soon as the donation is processed, tested, and brought to the hospital, it’s a revolving door. People’s lives are on the line and time is essential,” Forbes said.
According to Forbes, the convalescent plasma donation process takes approximately six steps from start to finish, including documentation, collection, and infection testing.
Flagla Hospital is just one of the many medical institutions participating in the Mayo Clinic-led clinical study of COVID-19’s effectiveness of plasma treatment.
Miami mayor Francis Suarez was the first person in Florida to donate convalescent plasma after a successful fight against the virus.
Plasma can be donated every 28 days. People who have recovered from coronaviruses are encouraged to visit www.oneblood.org to see if they meet the eligibility requirements for a plasma donor.
The One Blood Center in St. Augustine does not collect plasma, but the larger campus in Jacksonville does.
Flagla Hospital is also promoting the promotion of plasma donations.
