EEE detected in mosquitoes in Barry County
Barry County, Michigan (WLNS) — Health officials are urging people in central Michigan to avoid mosquito exposure after a June 30 posting of a mosquito in Barry County. Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE).
EEE is a virus that is transmitted to humans and animals (often horses) through mosquito bites.
Thursday’s announcement from the Barry Eaton District Health Department said: First EEE detection of the year in Michigan When Bay County Mosquitoes Test Positive July.
“EEE is one of the most dangerous mosquito-borne diseases in the United States, with a 33% fatality rate among those who get it,” said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Chief Medical Officer.
EEE is 90% fatal in horses.
People under the age of 15 and over the age of 50 are most at risk of developing serious illness after being infected with EEE.
There is no vaccine or treatment for EEE in humans. Here are some recommended steps to avoid mosquito-borne diseases:
- Apply a repellent that contains DEET or another EPA-approved product.
- Wear light-colored long-sleeved shirts and trousers. Apply insect repellent to your clothing.
- Install screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.
- Empty the water in mosquito breeding areas around your home for at least a week. (Buckets, children’s pools, old tires, and other containers that hold water.
Recommended preventive measures for horses include vaccination against EEE.
Michigan has no human cases of EEE in 2022. However, EEE resulted in three horse deaths in Eaton, Roscommon and St. Joseph counties, and he and one bird death in Houghton counties.
In 2019, Michigan recorded 10 cases of EEE, 6 of which were fatal.
