‘As we age, our bodies are less able to handle extreme temperature changes’: How seniors can stay safe this summer
Bend, Oregon. (KTVZ) — It’s been a hot week here in Central Oregon, with temperatures hovering in the high 80s to 90s, and hotter weather expected.
If you’re particularly sensitive to heat, staying hydrated and cool can help you stay safe this summer.
Older people are more susceptible to heat-related complications because they are at higher risk for medications and chronic diseases.
“As we age, our bodies become less tolerant of extremes of temperature, including extreme cold and extreme heat, so the older we get, the higher our risk of overheating,” Mosaic Community Health family physician Jessica LeBlanc, M.D., said Thursday.
A cooling station provides a place to stay and relax to prevent overheating.
Deschutes County uses information from the National Weather Service to monitor heat risk and determine if a heat emergency is occurring.
With this proclamation, a cooling center was opened to help those in need.
“It’s time to monitor these levels and, based on the duration of the event, work with the Sheriff’s Emergency Management Group to recommend whether we believe county-level activation is required to open cooling spaces,” said Carissa Heinige, Deschutes County Public Health Emergency Coordinator.
Lack of sweating, fatigue, and irritability are all symptoms of heat stroke.
LeBlanc says always check on your neighbors and friends in hot weather.
