West Nile virus mosquito found in Anne Arundel County
The Ann Arundel County Health Department announced Thursday the first confirmed West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes in two districts of the county, but no human cases have been reported.
These are the first virus-positive reports in the county this year. After 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the Maryland Department of Agriculture will spray the solution near the intersection of Crane Highway and Davidsonville Road, where mosquitoes were found. Communities in the affected area include Amberfield, Lake Louise, and the Northwest Crofton Community District.
The Department’s mosquito control program uses a permethrin-based solution approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in public health mosquito control programs without posing an unreasonable risk to human health. The Maryland Department of Agriculture recommends extreme caution and avoiding outdoor activities while spraying.
West Nile virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected by eating infected birds. Bites by infected mosquitoes can spread her WNV to humans and other animals.
