First Review of Coronavirus Death Shows Covid Spreading From Liverpool And Chester To North Wales

As the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the UK subsided, results of a review of virus-related deaths in Wales were published.

Between March 1 and May 31, coronaviruses accounted for 24.1% of all deaths in Wales.

The equivalent rate of coronavirus-related deaths in the UK was 42%.

In Wales, coronavirus mortality was highest in the Cardiff and Vale Healthboard Area, with the highest mortality among the elderly, the BAME community, and underprivileged communities. Men have consistently high mortality rates in all ethnic groups.

The pandemic reportedly “seen” to travel west and north from Wales to England, specifically the virus moved from Chester and Liverpool to North Wales.

It takes extra time to prepare, and lockdown could be one of the reasons for the proportionately fewer deaths.

“A weekly, country-specific, or regional analysis of excess mortality shows a similar pattern across all regions, but there are slight differences in the timeline and peak scales.

Excess mortality (that is, levels of mortality above the recent average for the time period) was seen slightly earlier in London and in the southeast than in other areas.

Overall, by the end of April, the number of deaths in Wales was 25% higher than the five-year average and lower than England (46%) and Scotland (37%).

Wales numbers are similar to East Midlands, eastern and southeastern England, but otherwise only higher than southwestern.

The report also highlights how testing, tracing, protection programs and sensitive early warning systems can play an important role in addressing potential additional peaks in the community.

It also calls for continued focus on identifying and protecting the most vulnerable people in society.

“It will be impossible for years to truly understand the impact of SAR-COV-2 on Wales and the UK as a whole,” the review states.
