Hidalgo County reported 1,320 new COVID-19 cases and 17 deaths on Sunday. Judge Richard F. Cortez said the county is still in test trouble and may have to wait up to a week to receive results from state-owned sites.
According to Cortez, the county continues to see community members gather in large crowds and engage in family gatherings. He said he would give a new order this week in hopes of slowing the virus. Mr Cortez supported the idea of a two-week blockade and said he called on local mayors to help execute orders.
“If I shut it down for two weeks, we will continue to implement these precautions to keep insignificant people staying home, we will delay the spread of this thing and eventually control it. , Someone has a better idea to send it to me. Send it to me immediately,” he said.

Many hospitals in the Rio Grande Valley have reached capacity and, in some cases, had to fly patients outside the area for treatment. Concerns about the quality of care and the number of health care workers available to safely treat cases in local hospitals continue to grow.
“A three-digit number of healthcare providers dropped out of the system,” Sunday said Dr. Ivan Melendez of the Hidalgo County Health Department had previously tested positive for COVID-19 in June.
“I know that at least half a dozen doctors have resigned this week,” Melendez said. “We know of an increasing number of nurses who have died.”
Senator Juan “Chui” Hinojosa said that Texas dispatched 624 nurses and medical personnel to help a staffed hospital in the same virtual event.
“We are in a medically inadequate area and face additional challenges,” he said. “For us, we see what’s happening here in the valley as a state and have responded.”
In Texas, Hidalgo is on the list of the top 10 counties with the most confirmed cases of COVID-19. The US Department of Health and Human Services recently classified Edinburgh City as a COVID-19 hotspot.
