Promising signs of coronavirus vaccine | West Coast Sentry
Australia’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer commended the breakthrough in coronavirus vaccine research and greatly encouraged the progress of the UK-based team.
Scientists at Oxford University, who are working with pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca, say the vaccine has been tested to generate a protective immune response and appear to be safe.
Deputy Chief Medical Officer Nick Coatesworth said safety and efficacy are key to finding the right drug.
“It looks very encouraging, and I know Professor Andy Pollard and his group of researchers are there, they are absolutely world-class,” he told ABC TV on Tuesday. It was
Vaccines are intended to induce antibody and T cell responses so that they can attack the virus and infected cells.
“They are the two parts of the immune system that work together to protect against COVID-19,” said Dr. Coatesworth.
“So what we’re really seeing is that these two elements of the immune system are being boosted by vaccines.”
He said the next step would be to see the boosted immune response translated into protection from coronaviruses.
Extended trials aim to vaccinate 50,000 people over the next 6-8 weeks.
Dr Cotsworth, at the Australian Vaccination Task Force, said there were important steps to get through, but he hoped.
“The fingers are completely here to make sure we understand when and when the vaccine will be available to Australians,” he said.
On Monday, 275 new infections were recorded in Victoria and 20 more in NSW.
Most cases in New South Wales involved three growing clusters of pubs, clubs and restaurants.
Hundreds of people visiting the venue were tested for coronaviruses and were told to self-isolate at home.
Dr. Coatesworth warned people to alter their social distance, hygiene, behavior around testing, or risk the occurrence of a Melbourne style.
“If people don’t receive the message, they will find themselves in a situation where the larger Melbourne and Mitchell Shire are now,” he said.
However, he said, the increase in cases in New South Wales was still associated with known outbreaks and would be different from Victoria at this stage.
“It’s still possible for the public health team in New South Wales to control this.”
NSW Premier Gladys Belekikilian asks people to wear masks in public places when it is difficult for them to keep a distance.
But from Thursday it wasn’t enough to follow the Victorian government, which forces face covering in Melbourne and Mitchell Shire.
South Australia has threatened prisoners for violations of coronavirus border regulations for up to two years.
