Dangerous and often deadly mosquito-borne illnesses are emerging earlier in the northeastern United States, and health professionals say they could also predict a “busy year” in Michigan.

Eastern equine encephalitis has been a problem for decades, but this year Early Discovery in Massachusetts and New Jersey Mosquitoes have no foreshadowing, coupled with the lack of health department resources during a pandemic.

“I’m worried,” said Scott Clans, head of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s mosquito repellent strategy. “It could indicate a busy year.”

In 2019, there were 38 human cases and 15 deaths from EEE nationwide. The deaths of 10 and 6 people in those cases occurred in Michigan. According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services website, the disease also infected 50 animals across the state.

Kimberly Sign, an agency epidemiologist, said EEE rarely causes human illness in Michigan. “We can go for years without seeing a person’s case,” she said. “We sometimes pick up animal cases and eventually never human cases.”

Arboviruses transmitted by mosquitoes have already been nationwide affected.

So far, by 2020, 14 people in the Florida Keys had a locally infected dengue, which could cause fever, severe body aches, and vomiting. Massachusetts discovered the first mosquito carrying EEEAccording to the CDC, about one-third of infected people die. The West Nile virus has been found in mosquitoes, birds, or other species in at least 18 states and has been infected in 9 states.

Mary Grace Stobierski, a Michigan public health veterinarian, told The Associated Press that invasive mosquitoes known to infect tropical viruses in Great Lakes have already been detected this season.

More uncertainty

EEE causes more problems than other arboviruses. Because it generally spreads to certain species that bite humans. Meanwhile, state health officials say West Nile and Zika live primarily on animal-eating mosquitoes.

The symptoms can be very similar to the flu, Sign said. Like fever, body aches, headache that does not improve after 1-2 days. “If you experience a lot of outdoor exposure or are bitten by a mosquito, you need to talk to your doctor,” she said. “We really encourage hospitals to send specimens to our lab for testing.”

Emily Dinh, MDHHS’s medical entomologist, said it usually occurs every 10 years in Michigan. “They’re so localized that it’s hard to tell if the EEE is deteriorating or constant,” she said. “It seems that the time frame between occurrences is getting shorter.”

Health officials said they were concerned that the time spent by residents as a result of COVID-19 could generally exacerbate arbovirus cases. More than that, the coronavirus kept the health department staff busy, leaving no time to prepare for a typical mosquito.

“This year it will be like a wildcard and you won’t get the kind of surveillance we normally do,” said David Brown, a technical advisor to the American Mosquito Control Association.

In Washtenau County, mosquito samples have not been collected because the Department of Health typically did not have the staff or ability to hire and train summer interns to do their jobs.

Dinh collaborated with Lansing’s EEE Institute. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the institute has ceased all arbovirus activity and is rigorously addressing COVID-19, she said.

According to the sign, Michigan has no state-wide mechanism for mosquito surveillance or control, but there are several counties around the Saginaw Bay with a taxpayer-funded system.

“They’re using different treatments to reduce the number of mosquitoes, based on what they found in their surveillance,” she said. “In some of our states that have historically been affected by the EEE, there is no such infrastructure.

“We tend to experience outbreaks as an individual year, but what we don’t really understand is illness.”

Mosquito surveillance and killing is an important public health challenge used to control the spread of deadly diseases. In recent years, about 200 people die from the top mosquito-borne diseases in the United States each year, but unlike other countries where hundreds of thousands of people are ill, these low numbers have been reduced by the public health sector. It’s a hard work. And die every year.

How to prevent mosquito bites

To prevent infections, whenever a Michigan resident goes to a bog or swamp, especially in the southwestern part of the state, Dinh recommends mosquito repellents, long sleeves, and avoidance of those areas after sunset. ..

  • Eliminate accumulated water source

  • When wearing outdoors, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks.

  • Apply EPA-registered insect repellent according to the label instructions.

  • Make sure you have a screen that fits your door and window.
