Aurora, Coro. (CBS4)- After helping the COVID-19 fight as a registered nurse for months, Mary Ann Flick needed a vacation. She didn’t know that she was most likely to get the coronavirus during the trip.

“It’s hard to take a break from your mental health and be alert to people close to you,” said Mary Ann Flick. “This is a reality, an awakening call that many people need, and I say it still exists and is not something we need to take lightly.”

According to the CDPHE date, Flick is only 28 years old, making it one of the most prevalent age groups in Colorado. Last week she went to the emergency room because her condition was so bad.

“I had a pretty terrible muscle aches. Fever, chills, and some headaches, loss of taste, appetite and smell,” she said. “I didn’t feel comfortable. I thought it was my appendix. So I went to the emergency department at night. As a nurse, when you said you went to the emergency department, you got there. Will take quite a while.”

She has not been admitted to the hospital and feels lucky that her illness remains mild on her part.

“Both my husband and I take this seriously. Especially nurses, working in hospitals and taking extra precautions against them. Also during the surge in March, April and May. I was working directly with a COVID patient. It was hard for me to figure out how to put down the guard for a moment. It doesn’t matter what happens.”

Flick has been quarantined since he returned from vacation. She has not returned to work at UC Health and may not return for more than a week as the hospital employs a strict protocol for COVID-19 positive employees.

As she recovers, she is helping the UC Health clinical trials on antibody doses.

“This is for tested COVID-positive patients, and we need to start the clinical trial within 3 days of finding it positive. We started last Thursday. And you I had to have symptoms for less than a week, so I’m within that range, which is called monoclonal antibody research,” Frick said. “The overall reason for this research is to see if it can reduce the impact of viral infections. But COVID also reduces the need for outpatient visits.”

She hopes it won’t be long before she can return to an active lifestyle. But she also wants to listen to the warnings that other young adults are abundant.

“People need to take a perspective and realize that this is bigger than ourselves, and we need to do whatever we can to overcome this,” Frick said.
