Impact of Coronavirus: UCSF Survey Report of Moderate to Severe Stress Levels in ER Doctors During Pandemics
“I think I’m pretty stressed,” said Rob Rodriguez, an ER doctor at San Francisco General Hospital, who spoke to ABC7 Tuesday night after landing in Brownsville, Texas.

Dr. Rodriguez is from Brownsville and is volunteering in a hospital with a large surge.
“My best friend is in the ICU at the local hospital.”
Stress is something that Rodriguez is very familiar with. He is the lead author of the first known study of physician stress levels during the pandemic.
More than 400 emergency physicians were investigated in California, Louisiana, and New Jersey, and Rodriguez said they all had in common.
“We have noticed a surge in overall anxiety levels.”

This study shows that when a pandemic begins, doctors’ emotional fatigue and burnout increase, and there are differences in how men and women affect each other. Female ER doctors reported slightly higher stress levels at work and at home.
“Women, whether they are children or relatives, are likely to have a role in providing care,” said Maria Raven, head of emergency care at UCSF. “They are also more likely to provide more time care than their male counterparts. It will be very, very stressful.”
Dr. Raven participated in the study in March and April, where little is known about the spread of the virus.
Most doctors surveyed reported a change in behavior towards family and friends, especially a decrease in affection.

“I have had a few minor symptoms that have been tested and gotten negative a few times, but you need to be more careful, especially as a doctor, because you can really take it home. Please raise a child.”
Rodriguez and Raven both say that increasing the supply of PPE will reduce the stress levels of doctors. They also say that quick tests are more widely available and that if everyone takes their masks more seriously, their anxiety will be alleviated further.
“We all need to be responsible and wear masks,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez says he will continue to study stress levels via pandemics to address the different stressors that are occurring when different problems occur.
