WATCH LIVE: CDC experts consider and vote on new COVID vaccines
Public health experts on Tuesday will discuss and vote on the use of the next COVID booster formulation, which could be available nationwide as early as this week.
The meeting is expected to begin at 10 a.m. ET on Sept. 12. Watch it live in the video player above.
If the panel of experts votes to recommend the next COVID shots, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Mandy Cohen will then decide whether or not to approve that recommendation for the public.
The vote comes after the Food and Drug Administration has already vetted the data and determined that the vaccines are safe. On Monday, the FDA decided that anyone ages 5 or older is eligible to receive the latest COVID mRNA doses from Pfizer and Moderna, regardless of whether or not they had been previously vaccinated, so long as it has been at least two months since their last COVID vaccine dose.
The agency also authorized dose recommendations for previously COVID-vaccinated children 6 months to 4 years old. For kids age 6 months to 4 years who have not been vaccinated against COVID, the FDA approved the three-dose Pfizer vaccine or the two-dose Moderna vaccine to enhance their protection against COVID going into fall and winter.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend how vaccines are used. The booster decision comes at a time when federal data have suggested a recent rise in COVID hospitalizations and deaths.
Since the last bivalent booster was authorized last September, 152.5 million doses have been distributed, according to the CDC’s COVID Data Tracker.
When that booster was greenlighted, the CDC recommended it for everyone ages 6 months or older but strongly urged people in high-risk groups, including older adults and people with compromised immune systems, to get that added layer of protection against severe illness, hospitalization and death.
