PHW classification shows that 1,172 patients were definitely hospitalized with the virus
Details were first published on how hundreds of patients were infected with coronavirus during hospitalization in Wales.
Public Health Wales (PHW) follows its Scottish counterpart in publishing data on so-called nosocomial cases.
We found about 1,800 patients who were “probable” or “certain” to have captured Covid-19 after hospitalization.
According to the PHW, 11% of all cases were due to hospital infections, a “significant” decrease from peak.
How are Covid-19 patients defined?

Some patients may have been admitted to the hospital unaware that they already had one.
Infections are categorized as follows:
- Patients who test positive within 2 days of being hospitalized-this is still attributed to a community infection.
- The second category-“indeterminate”-a positive test 3-7 days after admission
- “Possible”-First positive test 8-14 days after admission
- Confirmed-Patient has been in the hospital for 15 days or more when first examined.
The PHW numbers show that 1,172 patients belonged to the “clear” category and another 616 belonged to the “estimated” group.
The number of “indeterminate” groups is just under 500.

In the last week of Wales ending July 19, there were 125 confirmed Covid-19 cases.

Robin Howe, PHW Incident Director, said the rate was “significantly down” by more than 90% from its peak, with real progress.
“The data show that the spread of coronaviruses in the healthcare setting is controlled, and it is safe for people to access health services in Wales,” he said.
“Like other parts of the world, hospitals are being infected in Wales and the infectivity of the virus poses a challenge to healthcare services.
“There were quite a few nosocomial infections early in the pandemic, peaking during the week of April 5.”

By June 28, more than 18,250 people in Scotland had been tested for coronavirus.
Nearly 72% were infected in the community, and an additional 3,500 (19.3%) were positive within 2 days of hospitalization and were infected.

Another 272 patients were “probable”.
