Health officials say coronavirus is “good” as the second leading cause of death in Los Angeles County

The coronavirus is expected to be the second leading cause of death in Los Angeles County, a health official said Wednesday.

The Ministry of Public Health reported an additional 64 deaths and 3,266 cases, reaching a total of 164,870 and 4,213 dead due to the virus. In the first six months of the year, the virus killed more patients than any other disease except coronary heart disease, said Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer.

“I believe this week could be an important turning point in determining if our collective efforts are beginning to take us for the better,” Ferrer said. .. “The stakes are really high.”

Hospitalization of patients with coronavirus remains at a daunting level, with 2,207 currently in hospital, exceeding 2,200 for four consecutive days.

The number of hospitalizations has increased significantly since last month, reaching a record high of 2,232 on Monday. The largest increase in hospitalization is children.

According to the Ministry of Public Health, the number of hospitalized patients under the age of 17 increased by 50% from 14-18 June to 14-18 July. Hospitalizations between the ages of 18-40 have increased by 29.7% since mid-June, with 33.5% for 41-64 and 12.8% for those over 65.

Still, health officials say that the oldest patients are still most likely to die of the virus, except for those with underlying health conditions. No children have died from the virus, Ferrer said.

“Young adults have a higher prevalence of new infections, but older people are dying,” Ferrer said, while younger adults have a higher prevalence in the last few weeks.

“This is very serious and very realistic,” Ferrer said. “Before you ignore our Public Health Directive, think about those you love, and those our other people love.”

“Avoid getting together with people who aren’t living together,” she said. “If you keep getting together for barbecues, pool parties, dinners and other events, it’s very difficult to delay the virus.”
