Fentanyl deaths in Denver increase, up 282% since 2019

DENVER — Denver experiences a surge in deaths from overdose associated with fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid that is 50 times more potent than heroin.
Denver’s Department of Public Health and Environment reports that between January and May, fentanyl-related overdose mortality increased by 282% compared to the same period last year.

“Fentanyl-induced overdose occurs faster and is harder to stop than that caused by other opioids,” city officials advised in a Wednesday morning press release. “This medicine comes in a variety of forms, including tablets, capsules, rocks, and pure powders. The Denver Department of Health, in collaboration with Denver Police and other partners, is monitoring the Denver area for the presence of fentanyl “with the aim of reducing the risk of death from overdose in the community.”
