OC health officials said bats found near the AT&T store in Anaheim were rabies positive
Orange County health officials warned residents on Friday of a recently discovered rabies bat outside an Anaheim company.
According to a news release from Orange County Healthcare Agency, Bat was found this Sunday at about 11:15 AM at the entrance to the AT&T store at 130 blocks on Katera Avenue.
Rabies has been tested as a potentially lethal disease that can spread by being bitten by an infected animal or scratched by a rarely infected animal. Bats have small teeth, so it can be difficult to detect their bite.
The majority of recent rabies cases in humans have been spread by bats. According to health officials, such cases are rare, but potential exposure to the virus should be evaluated.
Anyone who thinks they have come in contact with a rabies bat is immediately invited to call the Healthcare Agency’s epidemiology program at 714-834-8180.
After 5 pm or on weekends, people dial 714-834-7792, are asked to leave a message with their name and phone number, and someone at the agency returns.
Rabies is almost always fatal when symptoms occur (usually about 3-8 weeks), so immediate preventive treatment is essential. This usually involves a series of injections of the vaccine, health officials said.
