N.Y. health leaders speak ahead of World AIDS Day

About 630,000 people died from Human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, around the world last year, according to the World Health Organization.

Its devastating impact on individuals and families is why 35 years ago, Dec. 1 became a day of remembrance, World AIDS Day.

More than 360 of the people who died globally were New Yorkers. It’s a number that has come down significantly over the years, but is still too many, as highlighted at the state’s annual Ending the Epidemic Summit.

“Our theme for this is ‘together we adapt and thrive,’” said state Department of Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald. “History will look back at this, and I do believe we will end HIV transmission in the United States.”

Something that many in the 1980s and early 1990s thought was impossible.

“I was told I had three months to live,” said Perry Junjulas, who was diagnosed with AIDS in 1995. “I had no reason to doubt anyone because people were dying around me.”

Not to mention, the disdain people developed.

“There was some suffering with this that was, quite frankly, needless in the late 80s,” McDonald said. “A lot of stigma, bias and discrimination.”

Minimizing that has been a mission for the state DOH, which reports about 30% of New Yorkers living with HIV still experience stigma, down from 38% in 2017.

“If we don’t remember our past, we’re doomed to repeat it,” McDonald said.

Junjulas believes the focus needs to be on breaking down the barriers for underserved communities. It’s work the Albany Damien Center specializes in, and is led by Junjulas.

“Persons who are in poverty, persons who are homeless, persons from Black and brown communities, LGBTQ communities,” he said.

Junjulas says knowing whether you’re living with HIV is also critical. The state estimates about 94% of New Yorkers living with HIV know it.

“Once you know your status, there are incredible once-a-day pills you can take,” Junjulas said. “I always say pills only work if you put them in your mouth.”

There are a number of resources DOH offers for people living with HIV/AIDS and families with loved ones battling the illness.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price.
