COVID-19 Nurse flies to Boston for treatment after paralysis – CBS Boston

Boston (CBS)—A nurse who was at the forefront of the fight against coronavirus was transferred to Boston after being paralyzed by a coronavirus-related infection. Desmond Silva, 22, is taken from Florida by a special medical jet to the Massachusetts General Hospital ICU.

His mother, Barbara Bonnett, lives in Massachusetts. She said her son had been infected with the virus a few months ago and seems to be fully recovered.

“Devastating is an understatement. Neither mom nor dad should have to experience the pain we’ve had so far,” Bonnet said.

Silva works as a nurse at the Largo Medical Center in Orlando. According to Bonnett, he was treated for a rare spinal infection, which caused paralysis from the neck down. He was hospitalized for a week and was taken to Boston on Saturday night for treatment.

“I’m absolutely fighting for his life,” said Bonnet. “It was caused by a viral infection and tested positive for COVID two months ago.”

She said her son became a nurse just a year ago and is very excited to help those in need. Now he realizes he is on the other side of the front.

“I want to tell you that the COVID is real. It’s an unknown thing, watch for signs and symptoms.”

Silva’s mother, father, and stepmother are all nurses. The family firmly believes that he will be fully recovered, and this life-altering setback does not prevent him from doing what he was born to do for him.

“He followed our footsteps and we are very proud of him,” said Bonnet.
