New warnings about hypothermia from the Alabama Department of Public Health
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A new warning this week from state health leaders about hypothermia. Doctors told WBRC that even with milder temperatures outdoors, you need to make sure you are keeping warm. Officials say that 18 people died from hypothermia last year in Alabama.
Health leaders say the most vulnerable populations for hypothermia are young children and older adults. Although it may not seem extremely cold outside, the number of deaths tied to hypothermia have increased in the last two years.
The symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, slurred speech, and some can even pass out.
For young infants, a clear sign of hyperthermia is sleeping and finding it hard to wake them. If this occurs, health leaders said you need to warm them up immediately.
Wes Stubblefield with the Alabama Department of Public Health said that even when temps are in the 40′s, its extremely important that you are keeping you and your family warm.
“In 2021 we had 10 deaths tied to hyperthermia and in 2022 we had 18 deaths. So, these deaths do happen and they are unfortunate, but they are also preventable.”
Health leaders also warn that hypothermia can impact even healthy adults that use alcohol or drugs.
