Majority of new viral cases in young Canadian adults

Health officials warned young adults on Sunday that they were not “invincible” for the disease, saying that Canadians under the age of 39 clearly represent the vast majority of new cases of COVID-19 in Canada.
“Recent national surveillance data shows that Young adult 20-39 years old is the highest Incidence Canada’s Chief,” for all ages in Canada public health Teresa Tam said in a statement.
The week-to-July 22 incidence was highest among young men and women aged 20 to 29 years (14.4 and 13.8 cases per 100,000 respectively), followed by ages 30 to 39.
“Young Canadians are not invincible with the disease,” warned Tam, pointing out that older people are not the only ones at risk of serious health problems when infected.
She noted that 63% of the cases of COVID-19 reported to public health last week involved people under the age of 39, with about a third being hospitalized.
Last week, 485 new cases were reported daily nationwide.
As Canada continues to lift lockdown restrictions, Tam sought to pay close attention to fellow citizens and respect social distances and hygiene measures.
“Without a vaccine, living in COVID-19 is not without risks,” she added.
Canada has recorded 113,800 new cases of coronavirus and 8,900 deaths to date, according to the latest available figures.
Although public health guidelines are widely respected in Canada, hundreds of people still protested wearing face masks in Quebec City on Sunday. This is now obligatory in the French-speaking world.
