Mothers are Not Likely to Infect Newborns With COVID-19: A Study
Washington: COVID-19 mothers are unlikely to transmit the virus to newborns as long as hygiene precautions are followed, a new study from the United States suggests.
According to a study published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health magazine, an observational study of 120 babies born to infected mothers in New York showed that they had been breast-fed at birth or two weeks after skin-to-skin contact. No infection was found. All babies could be breast-fed with their mothers, as long as women wear surgical masks and frequently undergo hand-washing and breast-washing procedures.
Greater research may be needed to draw firm conclusions about the risk of transmission, but these latest results may give the new mother “somewhat peace of mind,” the authors write. ..
The findings support the recommendations by the World Health Organization and the Royal Society of Obstetrics and Gynecologists in England that breastfeeding and room sharing may be safe if precautionary measures are taken. They are also consistent with the latest guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics, which advised the temporary isolation of previously infected mothers and newborns.
“We know that skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding are important for both mother-infant bond and long-term child health,” co-led Weill Cornell Medicine-New York Presbyterian. The study, said Patricia De La Mora, a doctor at Komansky Children’s Hospital. “Our findings suggest that babies born to mothers with COVID-19 infections can safely benefit from them if appropriate infection control measures are taken.”
120 babies were born to mothers at three hospitals in New York between March 22 and May 17. All were tested for COVID-19 within the first 24 hours. 79 of the babies were tested again for virus 5-7 days later, and 72 were tested further 2 weeks later. None of the results were positive and none of the babies showed any symptoms.
