DALLAS (NEXTER)-A new study of COVID-19 by researchers at King’s College in London found that there are six viruses with different groups of symptoms. The data was revealed using a tracking app that tracked 1,600 patients in the UK and US in March and April.
The researchers behind the study hope that this data will help doctors treat people and more accurately predict the types of medical care they may need.
Here are 6 clusters of symptoms Outlined in research, by CBS News:
- Influenza without fever: No headache, loss of odor, myalgia, cough, sore throat, chest pain, fever.
- Flu-like fever: Headache, loss of odor, cough, sore throat, hoarseness, fever, loss of appetite.
- Stomach: No headache, loss of odor, loss of appetite, diarrhea, sore throat, chest pain, no cough.
- Severity level 1, fatigue: Headache, loss of odor, cough, fever, hoarseness, chest pain, fatigue.
- Serious Level 2, Confusion: Headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, cough, fever, tingling, sore throat, chest pain, tiredness, confusion, muscle aches.
- Severe level 3, abdomen and respiratory: Headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, cough, fever, hoarseness, sore throat, chest pain, fatigue, confusion, muscle aches, shortness of breath, diarrhea, abdominal pain.
“I think it’s very interesting,” Dr. Bob Lahita told CBSN. “Of the patients I see, many of those who have recovered show a variety of ways: people with and without fever, people with nausea and vomiting, and people with diarrhea. .”
Researchers were able to predict that patients suffering from each symptom group may need respiratory support. For example, the first type, “No flu-like fever,” is 1.5% likely to require respiratory support, such as a ventilator. In contrast, the second type, “flu-like with fever,” is 4.4% likely.
According to CBS News, the most serious type of COVID-19, “severe level 3, abdominal and respiratory system,” has a 20% chance that a patient will need respiratory support.
