Cat tests coronavirus positive in UK

In the UK, pet cats tested positive for a new coronavirus that causes COVID-19, the government said Monday in the first confirmed case of an animal infected with the virus in the UK.
The UK Department of the Environment said that “all the evidence available” suggests that cats were infected with coronavirus from their owners who tested positive for COVID-19.
Both cats and humans were fully recovered, and no other animals or people in the family were infected, the concerned ministry said unidentified.
“This is the first case of a domestic cat that is positive for COVID-19 in the UK, but it should not cause vigilance,” said Yvonne Doyle, director of public health in England.
“Investigation in this case suggests that the infection spread from humans to animals and not the opposite,” Doyle added.
The government said Wednesday’s laboratory tests confirmed the infection, adding that there was no evidence that cats could transmit the virus to humans.
The World Health Organization (WHO) states that cats are the most susceptible species to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and can infect other cats.
“Tests conducted by the Animal and Plant Health Department have confirmed that the virus responsible for COVID-19 has been detected in UK pet cats,” said Christine Middlemiss, Chief Veterinarian.
“This is a very rare event, with the previously detected infected animals showing mild clinical symptoms and recovering within a few days.”
The WHO said it would investigate the possibility of cat-to-human transmission, but the chief scientist said that there was “little risk” from livestock.
