CDC Updates COVID-19 Separation Time Guidance

Updated guidelines allow people with mild to moderate illness to leave self-isolation after 10 days without undergoing a negative test. The CDC aims to reduce the “unnecessary long-term isolation and unnecessary use of laboratory test resources” by the new proposal.
“Test-based strategies are no longer recommended unless you discontinue isolation or precautions earlier than the 10-day guideline.”
According to the new guidance, people should use “symptom-based strategies” to stop self-separation and other preventative measures. Most people with COVID-19 have no fever for 24 hours and, if not using antipyretic drugs, quarantine ends 10 days after symptoms appear. For asymptomatic patients, isolation can be stopped 10 days after a positive test.
Patients with the more severe COVID-19 can be infectious up to about 20 days after the onset of symptoms, have additional CDC, and have to be isolated longer. People with immunodeficiency can extend their self-isolation period for a second test.
Importantly, the guidance is based on adult data, the CDC writes. There are insufficient data for children and infants to draw strong conclusions.
The CDC says it is not recommended to re-examine asymptomatic people within 3 months of recovery from COVID-19. People who develop new symptoms within 3 months of the initial infection may want to be retested and quarantined again, especially if they were in close contact with someone who was recently infected.
Moreover, the CDC writes that serology should not be used to indicate whether someone is infected or reinfected with COVID-19. Scientists are still learning how antibodies work in this coronavirus, and they are still uncertain of previous infections or immunity.
The updated recommendations are based on new research available in mid-July. As scientists learn more about coronaviruses, the CDC may update the guidelines again.
