West Nile virus detection requires WilCo Park time change
Williamson County, Tex.-A second West Nile virus positivity among mosquitoes in a regional park helped the county time the recreation area to mitigate the spread of potential illness, officials said. ..
County officials said the test came from a trap near Southwest Williamson County Regional Park. This is the second time this trap has become West Nile positive in a second mosquito test in the past three weeks, according to authorities.
Williamson County and City Health District have installed two enlarged trap sites near the park, both of which now yield negative test results. Other positive samples from this week’s routine trapping were not found as part of the health authorities’ integrated vector control program, officials added.
As a result of the positive results, Williamson County coordinates the visitor’s time at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park to prevent mosquitoes from being exposed to mosquitoes during their most active periods. From Tuesday, the park is open from 7:30am to 8pm.
“Health officials urge themselves to protect themselves from mosquito bites and to stay vigilant to prevent mosquitoes from propagating in their property,” officials said in an advisory. “Eliminate all constant water around your home or on your property. Mosquitoes cannot breed without constant water. Residents can’t drain with ponds, rain barrels, or pesticides. Stagnation water needs to be treated. These products are in a local hardware store.”
County officials say park officials will continue to work to control mosquitoes by using insecticides to drain or treat the drinking water. Officilas emphasized that no human cases of the virus have been reported in Williamson County since 2017. The Texas Department of Health reported the first human case of West Nile virus on July 23, this year. Added by interested parties.
“The West Nile virus should not be confused with other mosquito-borne viruses,” officials said. “There is no evidence that mosquitoes infect COVID-19.”
