Researchers in Maryland found by parents with school-age children drinking during COVID-19 pandemic – CBS Baltimore
Baltimore (WJZ) — Researchers from Maryland suggest that new research suggests that parents with school-age children are drinking during a pandemic.
Their research suggests that the stress of parents teaching or assisting their children in distance education may drive some to unhealthy habits.
Baltimore’s parent, Dan Brown, remembered the stress the pandemic had on his family.
“We both work from home and the kids won’t go anywhere soon,” he told WJZ on a walk with his twin girls at Patterson Park on Monday.
“I’m definitely a child-parent, I’m definitely nervous,” he said. “I think it’s also a disgusting energy for parents.”
Another parent-child pairing that is segregated together happens to be the research team of Elyse Grossman and Susan Sonnenschein. The duo investigated hundreds of parents during a pandemic and found that people were drinking more now than they were before COVID-19.
Drinking alcohol depresses the immune system and makes people more vulnerable to fighting the virus.
“They also showed a significant increase in how much people are consuming,” said Grossman, a policy researcher at the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.

More worrisome than they said was their finding that parents were engaged in more dangerous behaviors such as overdose. Studies show parents are twice as likely to be stressed because of distance learning.
“Parents of children of primary school age do much of the actual education,” Sonnenschein said.
Sonnenshinee, a professor of child development at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County, said it was still under scrutiny as to whether it was a stressor that led to increased drinking.
Grossman said he is studying public policy and expects more time to prepare for distance learning to put pressure on parents this fall for learning.
“We need a school system to provide guidance to teachers and then parents,” she said.
