NHS Tayside claims to have “effectively eliminated” hepatitis C

The Scottish Health Commission claims it is the first region in the world to effectively eliminate hepatitis C.
In 2012, NHS Tayside developed a pioneering approach to treating blood-borne viruses for injecting drug users.
According to the Health Commission, about 90% of infectious diseases occur from sharing needles.
Last year the Scottish Government announced Plan to eradicate hepatitis C By 2024.
NHS Tayside said he achieved his goal four years ahead of schedule.
An estimated 21,000 people live nationwide with chronic viral infections that cause progressive damage to the liver.
Standard treatments focus on people who have stopped using the drug or who are accessing help services.

Developed in collaboration with the University of Dundee, the NHS Tayside Project focuses on people who inject drugs without waiting for a recovery program or discontinuation of use.

Testing and treatment, including taking the drug combination daily for 8 weeks, is provided not only in nurse-led community clinics, but in more than 60 community pharmacies, prisons, and drug treatment services in Tayside.
