Researchers identify miRNAs that may promote hair regrowth
Researchers at North Carolina State University have identified microRNAs (miRNAs) that may promote hair regrowth. This miRNA-miR-218-5p- plays an important role in the regulation of pathways involved in follicle regeneration and may be a candidate for future drug development.
Hair growth depends on the health of the dermal papilla (DP) cells that regulate the growth cycle of the hair follicle. Exosomes are small sacs secreted by cells that play an important role in cell-to-cell communication. These sacs contain miRNAs.
MiRNAs are small molecules that regulate gene expression. Cheng and his team measured exosome miRNAs derived from both 3D and 2D DP cells. In 3D DP cell-derived exosomes, we identified miR-218-5p, a miRNA that enhances the molecular pathways that promote hair follicle growth. They found that increasing miR-218-5p promotes hair follicle growth, while inhibiting it causes loss of follicular function.
