According to the World Health Organization (WHO), July 28 was designated as World Hepatitis Day because it was the birthday of Dr. Baruch Samuel Blumberg, a Nobel laureate scientist. Types B and C are also the most common causes of cirrhosis and cancer. Types A and E are primarily caused by ingestion of contaminated food or water.

According to WHO Today, approximately 3.25 billion people worldwide are infected with hepatitis B and C. Hepatitis B virus infection causes approximately 9,000,000 deaths each year.

Prevalence of hepatitis in India

Indian Medical Research Journal, In India, about 250,000 die each year from viral hepatitis or its after effects.

It is more important than ever to spread awareness about this viral disease, as thousands are left untested and without proper treatment. It is important to manage existing health risks to reduce the burden on the country’s healthcare system, especially when the world is fighting a deadly outbreak of a new coronavirus.
