Florida: More localized dengue fever, West Nile virus reported

The Florida Department of Health in Monroe County reported that five more dengue fever had occurred locally over the weekend.

There are now 22 cases of dengue fever acquired in 2020 across the state, with 21 infected in Monroe County (one in Miami-Dade County).

Mosquito Control was immediately notified of the new case.

Dengue fever can manifest itself as a serious illness, such as the flu, with severe muscle aches and pains, fever, and sometimes a rash. There are usually no respiratory symptoms. Symptoms of dengue fever appear within 14 days of being bitten by an infected mosquito. Dengue is not contagious, but it is transmitted by the sting of an infected Aedes aegypti.

Two more asymptomatic West Nile virus (WNV)-positive blood donors were reported in Miami-Dade County. There were a total of 24 WNV infections in Miami Dade County in 2020.

Finally, Palm Beach County reported its first WNV case this year and advised WNV-positive blood donors on mosquito-borne diseases.

There are now a total of 25 WNV infections across the state in 2020 (3 symptomatic cases and 22 asymptomatic blood donors).
