One of the tricky aspects of COVID-19 is that infected individuals are experiencing a variety of different illnesses. The virus can cause havoc in the digestive system of one patient, but can lead to shortness of breath and fever in another patient.

To help sort out some confusion, a new non-peer-reviewed study reveals six different versions of the disease, each with its own cluster of symptoms that may be among the most common. I chose In addition, Kings College researchers found that each category of symptoms was likely to lead to levels of disease severity and need for hospitalization, and health professionals predict patient needs at an early stage of the disease. It shows that there is a possibility.

“These findings have important implications for the care and monitoring of people most vulnerable to severe COVID-19.” Press release..

Although the three main symptoms of COVID-19 are usually highlighted as cough, fever, and loss of smell, researchers use data from a symptom-tracking app with more than 4 million users to use headaches, myalgias. I have identified a long list of additional symptoms such as: Fatigue, diarrhea, confusion, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, etc.

The team focused on a subset of the data of approximately 1,600 users infected with COVID-19 in the United Kingdom and the United States, and identified six symptom groups outlined below.

1. Like flu, no fever: No headache, loss of odor, myalgia, cough, sore throat, chest pain, fever.

2. Flu-like fever: Headache, loss of odor, cough, sore throat, hoarseness, fever, loss of appetite.

3. Gastrointestinal: No headache, loss of odor, loss of appetite, diarrhea, sore throat, chest pain, no cough.

4. Severity level 1, fatigue: Headache, loss of odor, cough, fever, hoarseness, chest pain, fatigue.

5. Serious Level 2, Confusion: Headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, cough, fever, tingling, sore throat, chest pain, tiredness, confusion, muscle aches.

6. Severe level 3, abdomen and respiratory: Headache, loss of smell, loss of appetite, cough, fever, hoarseness, sore throat, chest pain, fatigue, confusion, muscle aches, shortness of breath, diarrhea, abdominal pain.

The researchers then did further analysis to determine if people in certain symptom groups are more likely to experience more serious illness and require respiratory support.

They found that the first cluster required 1.5% of patients, the second cluster required 4.4%, and the third required 3.3%. These numbers were 8.6%, 9.9%, and 19.8% for the third, fourth, and sixth clusters, respectively. In addition, nearly half of the patients in cluster 6 were hospitalized, compared to 16% of the first patients.

The team then developed a model that matched the patient’s age, gender, BMI, and pre-existing condition with symptoms collected 5 days after onset. It predicts the risk of patients being classified into hospitals and requiring hospitalization and respiratory support more accurately than existing risk models based only on age, gender, BMI, and existing conditions.

Patients who need respiratory support typically come to the hospital about 13 days after illness, so the study authors found that this model was about who is most likely to need intensive care. It may be helpful to the doctor by providing an “early warning”.

“If we can predict who these people will be on the fifth day, we will have time to give them support and to take early interventions such as monitoring blood oxygen and sugar levels and ensuring proper hydration- “Easy care you can do at home, preventive hospitalization and save lives,” Steves said.

Dr John Swartzberg, professor of infectious diseases and vaccinology at the University of California, Berkeley, said the study could help doctors and other health care providers identify people in need of faster, stronger interventions. There is a nature.

“Yes, we need to see how this works in the “real world.” “If used extensively, it should “learn” and become progressively more effective. “
