Common diabetes drugs associated with risk of complications
According to ADA, DKA can lead to death if left untreated.
The new study included more than 200,000 people with type 2 diabetes who started using SGLT2 inhibitors between 2013 and 2018.
During the study, 521 people were diagnosed with DKA.
The study found that the risk of DKA was almost three times higher in people taking SGLT2 inhibitors. Also, the risk depends on the type of SGLT2 inhibitor used.
Although Dapagliflozin (Farxiga) was associated with an 86% increase in DKA risk, studies found that patients using empagliflozin (Jardiance) had a 2.5-fold higher risk of DKA compared to DPP-4 risk did. Canagliflozin (Invokana) had 3.6 times higher DKA odds.
