Five Virus Incidents Related to Michigan Wedding Reception
Detroit (AP) — An indoor wedding reception attended by more than 100 people in southeastern Michigan was associated with five confirmed cases of COVID-19, officials said Wednesday.
Wayne County’s Public Health Division is investigating the July 18 event at Southgate’s Crystal Garden Banquet Hall, about 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Detroit.
Those identified as coronaviruses were instructed to self-separate. Wayne County’s epidemic team is reaching out to other people in attendance to see if there are more potential cases.
The reception violated Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s presidential decree, which limits the number of people attending indoor events, a county official said in a statement. Ordering limits attendance to 10 indoors and 100 outdoors.
Notifications have been sent to all county banquet halls that “reconfirm the rules” of the order, the county said. Inspections at banquet halls and other large venues will also be enhanced.
“The security and protection of Wayne County residents is our number one priority,” said Carroll Austerbury, a county health officer. “Companies should be willing to limit the spread of COVID-19 and follow life-saving rules.”
More than 79,100 viruses have been identified in Michigan. Over 6,170 deaths have been attributed to the complications of the disease.
The Associated Press left a message on Wednesday requesting comments from the manager of Crystal Gardens Banquet Hall.
Meanwhile, at least one of the only dormitories held this summer on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing tested positive for viruses.
The school’s housing office emailed students on Monday night that it was confirmed that people in Holmes Hall had the virus. The number of confirmed cases is not included.
School officials did not reveal how many students tested positive.
Michigan spokesman Dan Olsen said that students who tested positive for the virus would need to move to a building reserved for self-contained housing. Their room at Holmes Hall is cleaned and sanitized.
