Qualcomm suggests 5G iPhone launch may be delayed

Qualcomm shared a third-quarter earnings report today, according to Reuters, indicating that Apple’s future 5G iPhone may be delayed. Qualcomm said Q4 forecasts could be impacted by “delayed launch of global 5G flagship phones.”

From Qualcomm CFO Akash Palkhiwala, who called the delay “minor”:

“We see a partial impact of the delayed launch of our flagship phones, so we see a slight delay pushing some units into the September-December quarter.”

The fourth quarter covers July, August, and September, which is usually the month Apple launches new smartphones. Given the release timelines of other smartphones and Apple’s size, it’s unlikely that Qualcomm points to the launch of another smartphone, even if Qualcomm didn’t reveal the name of Apple or iPhone.

Apple uses Qualcomm’s 5G chip in its iPhone 12 lineup, and all models are expected to support 5G technology. There have been rumors suggesting that Apple’s iPhone launch will be postponed this year due to the ongoing global health crisis and travel restrictions.

So far, rumors have suggested that the iPhone could be delayed by a month or so, with its launch in October instead of September. It’s not clear if all iPhones will be delayed, or if some models will go out in September and others will go on sale after October.

As usual, Apple is likely to announce a new iPhone, usually in September, with plans to launch the device later this year. There is a precedent for a release that is separate from the announcement.
