Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro are constantly improving in appearance, similar to the Spatial Audio features that AirPods Pro has when iOS 14 arrives this fall. However, a new patent just discovered by Apple Insider shows that Apple has plans to adopt ear headphones in a completely different direction: bone conduction, a way to supplement sound quality.

A new patent, patent 10,728,649, called as if you hadn’t already guessed, concerns multi-pass audio stimulation using an audio compressor. That said, the air-conducting transducer is configured to convert the components of the audio signal into air vibrations that can be detected by the user’s ear. The bone conduction transducer is configured to transform another component of the audio signal into vibration of the user’s skull through direct contact with the user.

There are many more such things, but they are essentially a combination of the sound that is traditionally transmitted through the vibrations of air and the vibrations that are transmitted through bone conduction transmitted through bone.

This patent shows two ways of delivering audio, though traditional audio and bone conduction.

Bone conduction is not new, but the innovation is the recognition that it is not very good at handling high frequency sounds. Therefore, it is very useful when combined with the sound of moving in the air.

The patent will continue. The device separates the input audio signal using one or more filters to produce high-frequency, medium-frequency, and low-frequency components. The low and medium frequency components are processed using a compressor to reduce the dynamic range of the components and then combined to produce a combined component. The combined components are delivered to the user via the bone conduction transducer and the high frequency components are delivered to the user via the air conduction transducer.

The benefit of bone conduction is that it leaves the ear canal free to allow the transparent mode to work in current AirPods Pro, or supplements the sound to people with hearing impairments, for example.

These high frequencies can even tickle the user when transmitted by bone conduction. In this case, these higher frequencies pass through the normal air channel for sound.

The patent was first filed in 2018. So maybe in a future version of AirPods, it could soon pay off. As always, patents often don’t exist anywhere, often leading to totally unexpected destinations, but the potential for somehow enhanced audio seems very Apple-like.
