WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – Do you feel like you're sneezing all the time? Just because the weather is getting warmer doesn't mean it's allergy season, but what else could be causing it?
You know allergy season has arrived when pollen starts to accumulate on the trees. So far, nothing like that has happened yet. Dr. Todd Hostetler, an allergist with the Otolaryngology and Allergy Association, has patients coming in who think they have allergies because they're sneezing more often.
However, these symptoms are not due to normal outdoor allergies.
“We say it's pollen season, but some people actually have pollen season all year round,” Hostetler says. “They're allergic to cats, dogs, and dust mites in the house. So regardless of the season, there are a variety of allergies indoors all year round.”
It's also possible that it's just an illness.
“Sneezing, stuffy nose, all those symptoms apply to allergies. Perfect for a cold. Right? You get a viral upper respiratory infection. Perfect for a cold. You could get sinusitis.” Hostetler says.
If you want to find out what those allergies are, Hostetler says you should get tested.
“These symptoms really overlap, and nasal and sinus symptoms overlap,” he says. “So, is this an allergy to something around me? Is it pollen season? Is this my pet? Is this something inside or outside the house? So I'm allergic to something? Testing is very helpful.”
Hostetler said allergy season typically begins in the spring when pollen forms on trees. He also said that allergy season can be inconsistent, with some days being good and others being really bad. It's also possible that allergy season will come earlier, but it's too early to tell because it all depends on the weather.
