Quebec Public Health warns of dangerous synthetic opioid 25 times more powerful than fentanyl
Quebec City public health officials are warning Quebecers about a dangerous new drug being distributed in the city.
The green pill looks like OxyContin, but it actually contains protonitazepine, a synthetic opioid that is 25 times more potent than fentanyl.
“This drug is extremely dangerous,” said Dr. Anne-Frédéric Lambert Slime, medical consultant at the CIUSSS de la Capitale-Nationale. “If you take this drug, the risk of overdose is very high.”
The synthetic opioid recently surfaced in Quebec City and was found circulating around Montreal in early 2024.
Public health officials say the pills can be identified by their green color and the “80” and “OP” markings, and are advising Quebecers to be on the lookout for signs of an overdose.
“People become increasingly drowsy and their breathing decreases to the point of respiratory arrest, so they can lose consciousness and turn blue,” Lambert-Slice said.
“Therefore, you should avoid taking them alone, mixing substances, or even reducing your intake,” she said.
The overdose-stopping drug naloxone is available for free at pharmacies, but people taking protonitazepine may need to be given several doses of an antidote.
“We give naloxone [in case of overdose]. It's not dangerous to give naloxone even if you don't need it,” Lambert Slice said.
Protonitazepine cannot be detected with fentanyl test strips. Users in Quebec City are encouraged to go to their local community organization, such as SABSA, to test their substance for protonitazepine.
