PAHO calls for stronger measures against Aedes aegypti to combat dengue fever – PAHO/WHO

According to a February 16 PAHO alert, the number of dengue fever infections in the Americas will reach a record high in 2023, with a total of 4,565,911 cases and 2,340 deaths. This high transmission rate will continue in 2024, with 673,267 cases (almost 85% in the Southern Cone) and 102 deaths reported as of early February.
This figure represents a 157% increase year-over-year and a 225% increase compared to the five-year average. In the first five weeks of 2024, 11 countries and territories reported an increase in dengue cases, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Mexico, Paraguay, and Peru.
PAHO urges countries to maintain and strengthen surveillance, early diagnosis and timely treatment of dengue cases in a state of alert. It also calls for measures to be taken to organize healthcare networks to facilitate patient access and management, with the aim of preventing complications and deaths.
Additionally, PAHO calls for intensified communication campaigns to encourage community participation and timely medical attention to reduce mosquito breeding sites.
