Michigan reports first child death due to influenza as vaccine coverage declines

LANSING, MI (FOX 2) – The first child to die from the flu in Michigan has been confirmed by the health department.

The health department announced in a statement this week that the child was infected with influenza A(H1N1).1 of 93 influenza-related childhood deaths reported in the United States

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that between 20,000 and 57,000 people will die from influenza this season.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services acknowledges the increase in influenza cases even though only 25.1% of the state's residents are currently vaccinated.

“These are tragedies that no family should ever have to endure,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr. Natasha Baghdasarian. “Each year, influenza claims the lives of dozens of children across the United States.”

The health department used this opportunity to encourage others to get vaccinated. Seasonal vaccinations are recommended for people over 6 months of age to reduce transmission and protect against serious illness.

Pregnant people are also encouraged to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their babies.

Flu vaccination rates for children ages 6 months to 17 years are slightly lower than last year's vaccination rate, according to the Michigan Care Improvement Registry.

Influenza isn't the only disease circulating in Michigan.

The state is also working to contain potential exposure sites associated with measles cases. At least five cases have been reported to the health department in southeast Michigan.

Cases have also been reported in Wayne and Washtenaw counties.
