Indian Serum looks beyond coronavirus with new vaccines for malaria and dengue fever
Pune: CEO Serum Institute of India, the world's largest vaccine makerThe company said it has ramped up production by repurposing facilities used to make coronavirus shots, ahead of the rollout of vaccines for diseases such as malaria and dengue in the coming years.
As coronavirus manufacturing is scaled back due to declining demand, the company is instead using these facilities to manufacture new shots, which it estimates will increase total production by 2.5 billion doses. CEO Adar Poonawalla said in an interview.
Serum produces AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine (Covishield) in India under the brand name Covishield, as well as Novavax's protein-based COVID-19 vaccine.
The company invested US$2 billion to expand production at the peak of the global health crisis.
The company currently sells a total of approximately 1.5 billion doses of vaccine per year and estimates its total production capacity to be up to 4 billion doses.
“And this is also important because even if there is another pandemic in the future, we can vaccinate all of India in just three months, three to four months,” Poonawalla said. .
He said the company was in talks with other countries and governments to use these facilities in case of future outbreaks, but did not provide details of the discussions.
Poonawalla said Serum has the capacity to manufacture 100 million doses of malaria vaccine and could further scale up depending on demand. It has already produced 25 million doses ahead of release in the coming months.
