UK coronavirus update live: Latest news and statistics as Boris Johnson delays blockade relief
Boris Johnson has delayed a planned easing of Englands closure restrictions for at least two weeks amid an increase in coronavirus cases.
The prime minister announced on Friday that casinos, bowling alleys, skating rinks and nearby close-contact services should be closed, while indoor shows and pilots of the largest crowds at sports venues will not take place. Plans to allow wedding receptions for up to 30 people were also postponed.
He also announced that face veils will be mandatory in more indoor environments, including museums, cinemas and places of worship from August 8, and protection has been suspended for clinically vulnerable people in England and Scotland from Saturday.
This comes after tougher measures were imposed in parts of Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire and eastern Lancashire in northern England, banning people from different families from meeting inside or in gardens following a virus attack.
A number of countries around the world report record increases in coronavirus infections.
Poland reported its highest number of new coronavirus cases for the third day in a row today at 658, while Mexico surpassed the UK to become the country with the third highest number of coronavirus deaths on Friday, after registering a record daily increase in cases.
The Philippines reported 4,963 infections today, the biggest one-day jump in the record, bringing the total to 98,232 as deaths rose from 17 to 2,039.
The number of new cases confirmed in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, was about 472 today – a new record, NHK public television quoted officials as saying.
India recorded its strongest peak of 57,111 new cases in the past 24 hours, taking its coronavirus value close to 1.7 million. The country’s Ministry of Health also reported today 764 additional deaths, bringing it to 36,511.
California and Florida, two of the most populous U.S. states, reported record increases in coronavirus-related deaths on Friday, according to a Reuters group. Florida reported 257 deaths and deaths in California 208.
We should not play the game of guilt, but rather try to determine why some people believe that the virus poses no danger to them. While it is clear that some people in the Bame community are not exercising social distance, the same is true for white communities.
This includes a break in mandatory protection from extremely vulnerable clinical people, who can now gather outside in groups of up to six people while continuing to abide by the rules of social distancing, although this relaxation does not apply to Leicester, Luton and Blackburn with Darwen.
Tom Embury-Dennis take a look at the latest changes to the lock rules in this section below:
Russia’s health minister is preparing a mass vaccination campaign against the new coronavirus for October, local news agencies have reported after a vaccine ended clinical trials.
Mikhail Murashko said the Gamaleya Institute, a state-run research facility in Moscow, had completed clinical trials of the vaccine and documents were being prepared to register it, the Interfax news agency reported. He said doctors and teachers would be the first to be vaccinated.
“We plan wider vaccinations for October,” Mr Murashko was quoted as saying.
A source told Reuters this week that Russia’s first possible Covid-19 vaccine would secure local regulatory approval in August and be administered to healthcare workers shortly thereafter.
More than 100 possible vaccines are being developed worldwide, in an effort to stop the pandemic.
At least four are in the latest Phase III human trials, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), including three held in China and another in the UK.
Singing – especially large group meetings for extended periods – should be seen as a more dangerous practice, according to a paper discussed by the Scientific Advisory Group on Emergencies (Sage).
This is because of evidence suggesting that activity may produce more aerosols than normal speech or breathing.
Sage professor Graham Medley said the rise in coronavirus infections appeared to be among young people, but warned that there was a risk that it could be “thrown” into other parts of the population.
He said today program: “The age distribution of infections has changed, shifted to younger age groups and so it is likely that we will not see that increase in hospital admissions related to infection in the same way we did in March.
“But the big fear is that the virus just gets out of control and we end up in a situation where there are so many viruses that it inevitably spreads to all parts of the population.”
Prof Medley said the increased blockade measures in areas across northern England were “very unlikely” to be “the last intervention to be made in the region”.
“I fully expect there will have to be other interventions in other cases, but what the interventions really are depends on what happens,” he added.
Professor Graham Medley, a member of the Scientific Advisory Group on Emergencies (Sage), said England may need to consider closing pubs to reopen schools next month.
Asked about the prediction of Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty that the country was “close to the borders” of society’s opening, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine told BBC Radio 4 today program: “I think it ‘s quite possible.
“I think we are in a situation where most people think that opening schools is a priority for the health and well-being of children and that when we do that, we will recreate a lot of families.
“And so, indeed, by closing some of the other networks, some of the other activities may be required to enable us to open schools.
“It may come to a question of which one you trade against each other and then that is a matter of priority, do we think bars are more important than schools?”
When Matt Hancock announced late Thursday night that the city of West Yorkshire would be part of an attack in the north of England where coronavirus restrictions were to be tightened, many people here had long awaited it. The country, as they point out, has consistently been among England’s top Covid-19 hotspots.
However, what they could at least imagine was that the new guidelines, which essentially forbid friends and family from meeting at home and in kindergartens, would come at 9.30am after Eid al-Adha, a major Islamic festival celebrated by gathering with beloved ones.
Boris Johnson on Friday announced protective advice for people considered clinically extremely vulnerable during the peak of the pandemic in England will be stopped as planned from today.
Defense advice in Scotland will also be cut.
At a hastily scheduled press conference on 10 Downing Street on Friday, Boris Johnson said it was time to squeeze the brake pedal while returning to normal life.
It extended the ban on wedding receptions to up to 30 people, as well as blocks in indoor theatrical performances of the resumption and opening of entertainment venues, including casinos, football alleys and the rink. The reopening of nearby services in venues such as beauty salons was also delayed, as were sporting event pilots with crowds and gatherings at conference centers.
