Measles outbreak in Chicago: Mother Jessica Colletti shares horrifying story after her 3-year-old son contracted the measles virus

ABC7 spoke to the Chicago family. They say their infant is recovering from the virus and they are concerned that their infant may have contracted the virus too.
Chicago mother Jessica Colletti said she has no idea how her son contracted the measles. He does not attend CPS school and is mostly at home. His experience with the virus is something she never wants to endure again.
Colletti never expected something like this to happen to his family.
“I feel like I woke up in another world,” Colletti said.
Her 3-year-old son Vincent started feeling unwell last Wednesday.
“He was lethargic, not drinking or eating,” Colletti said. “We were in the hospital on Friday. They sent us home…we were told it was coronavirus.”
However, a few days later he was back at the hospital.
“On Monday morning, he woke up, not saying anything, not moving, and the rash started on his cheeks and face and then spread all over his body,” Colletti said. “I knew something was really wrong with my child.”

She said Vincent tested positive for measles and was the sickest she had ever seen him.
“Honestly, I thought he was going to die in my arms. And I just kept telling him, 'Mommy needs help, it's going to be okay.'”
The CDC recommends that children receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, the first at 12 to 15 months of age and the second between 4 and 6 years of age.
Colletti said her son received his first vaccination but is not yet old enough to receive his second shot.
“This means that if children are vaccinated with one vaccine, they are 93% protected against measles,” said Dr. Juanita Mora, an allergist and immunologist. “If they get two vaccines, the efficacy is 95 to 97 percent. There are a lot of young children in this age group who may fall into this range who haven't built up enough immunity.
As of Friday night, Vincent is beginning to recover.
“He seems to be getting a lot better,” Colletti said. “He's sitting next to me with chocolate on his face, but he's much better.”
The family's concerns are now focused on another child, who is also already showing symptoms.
“I never thought I would test positive for measles. Right now I'm just scared and worried about my 10-month-old son,” Colletti said.
She says her 10-month-old daughter has not had a rash so far.
The ordeal was described as so frightening that the entire family was forced to quarantine for 21 days.
