Seasonal allergies return to Central Texas
If you live in central Texas and find your seasonal allergies worse than usual this year, you're probably not alone.
Austin, Texas – If you suffer from allergies, you know how debilitating it can be.
This spring in particular may be an even tougher season for allergies.
Kristin Hildebrandt, who moved to Texas from Sweden about two years ago, said, “When I moved to Texas, I wasn't used to trees, so I developed allergies for the first time in my life.'' “I also noticed that my eyes were itchy, my nose was runny, and my throat was sore.”
Richard Southwick, who also recently moved to Texas from New York and is battling a new allergen, says, “I think it generally starts in the evening, and sometimes when you wake up in the morning you're stuck in traffic.'' ” he said.

Juniper pollen increases in early December and peaks in late December to early January, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service in central Texas.
Dr. Ron Cox, an allergy physician in Greater Austin, said allergies are actually the leading cause of lost work days and lost school days in this country.
It looks like this year will be no exception.
“The pollen is coming in earlier and the amount of pollen is increasing, so it might be a bit of a tough season for some people,” Cox said.
He blames a warmer winter for the increase in pollen counts this spring.
“I think it was due to the mild winter we had,” Cox said. “A lot of things are lasting much longer and coming into the world faster.”
He said grass and tree pollen are the main allergens currently sweeping Central Texas.
There are several things you can do to reduce symptoms.
Cox suggested enjoying the outdoors in the evening when pollen levels are lower.
“When you get home, take a shower and rinse your eyes with a commercial moisturizer to wash away the pollen,” Cox says. “You also have the option of flushing your sinuses with saline.”

Keeping your home and car windows closed can reduce your exposure to pollen.
Allergy medicine and dried nettle are also helpful to have on hand.
“I was taking allergy medication and the symptoms went away,” Hildebrandt said.
If all else fails, it may be time to see an allergist.
The good news is that as summer approaches in Texas and it gets a little hotter, tree and grass pollen should be mostly gone.
The only allergen left in Central Texas is mold.
